Welcome to Ysgol Afon Wen – Supporting Every Step of Your Child’s Educational Journey
At Ysgol Afon Wen, a maintained all-through school, we are proud to offer a seamless and nurturing educational experience for pupils from Nursery through to Year 11. Our school community is built on a foundation of creativity, innovation, and lifelong learning, reflecting our vision and values of fostering confident, compassionate, and capable learners who thrive at every stage.
Transition at Ysgol Afon Wen: Ensuring Smooth Progression Across All Key Stages
We understand that transitions in education can be both exciting and challenging for pupils and their families. That’s why at Ysgol Afon Wen, we have developed a thoughtful, well-structured transition programme that supports pupils as they move through the various phases of their education.
Early Years Transitions
- Nursery to Reception to Year 1: Our transition process at these early stages is designed to provide a gentle, supportive introduction to new learning environments. We work closely with families to ensure pupils feel secure, confident, and ready to embrace each new phase.
Transition from Primary to Secondary (Year 6 to Year 7)
- Our seamless transition approach means Year 6 pupils moving into Year 7 experience continuity within the same school ethos and values.
- Before the full transition week in June, pupils from our cluster and non-cluster schools spend three days engaging with our dedicated faculties of Creativity, Innovation, and Life. This immersive experience helps them build connections and familiarity with the secondary school environment.
- Following this, all incoming Year 7 pupils enjoy a full week together, culminating in a spectacular performance for parents. This event not only showcases the wonderful experiences and skills developed throughout the week but also celebrates the pupils’ exciting journey ahead.
Opportunities for Advanced Learners
- We offer our Activate and Advance pupils the unique chance to participate in our “Moving Up Day,” allowing them to experience life in the next stage of their education and prepare with confidence.
Transition from Year 11 to post 16 education, employment or training
- Ysgol Afon Wen work with Careers Wales, post 16 partners Bryn Celynnog, Coleg y Cymoedd and Y Pant to ensure that Year 11 intentions are discussed, mapped and actioned prior to completing Year 11. See post 16 transition plan for learners at Ysgol Afon Wen below.
