At Ysgol Afon Wen, we operate as a single school with pupils aged 3-11 and 11-16 on one site. Our core values are consistent throughout the school, fostering a unified environment. Our staff work as one cohesive team, sharing professional development and learning experiences with pupils across Activate, Advance and Achieve phases.

At Ysgol Afon Wen, we are committed to nurturing the potential within every pupil. Our Triple AAA Promise will inspire and ignite the learning spark by activating learning, advancing curiosity, and achieving success. Through this promise, we are dedicated to creating an environment where every pupil can flourish.

In Years 4 to 8, the Advance Phase, we aim to provide high quality education for all pupils. These years are essential developmental stages where students grow in confidence, curiosity, and independence. Each year brings new challenges and opportunities, both in the classroom and beyond.

    Years 4–6: Strengthening Core Skills

These years are all about consolidating key skills in literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving. Pupils deepen their understanding across the curriculum and are encouraged to take more responsibility for their learning.

    • Year 4: A time of growing independence. Pupils begin applying their skills to more complex tasks and start to develop their own learning habits.

    • Year 5: Greater focus is placed on preparation for upper years, with opportunities for leadership and enrichment.

    • Year 6: A year of transition. Pupils are supported through end-of-year assessments (e.g.,Welsh National Tests or internal exams) and begin preparing for the step up to secondary school.

Years 7–8: Start of Secondary Education

These early years of secondary education help pupils adjust to more structured timetables, specialist teachers, and increased academic expectations.

    • Year 7: Often a fresh start in a new environment. Pupils are introduced to a broader curriculum, and strong pastoral care helps them settle in.

    • Year 8: A year for exploring strengths and interests. Pupils continue to build study and organisational skills that prepare them for the demands of Year 9 and beyond.

    Nurturing the Whole Child

Across Years 4 to 8, schools aim to develop not just academic ability, but also social skills, creativity, and resilience. Enrichment opportunities—like music, sport, drama, and outdoor learning—are just as important in shaping well-rounded learners.

    Your Role as Parents

Support at home is vital. Helping with reading, encouraging curiosity, and showing an interest in school life all make a lasting impact. Regular communication with teachers ensures any issues are addressed early.

We hope that the pupils will take the skills and knowledge gained, build on their self-confidence and ability to work independently and continue to build on the foundations for a lifetime love of learning as they move into the ACHIEVE phase.
